Oh, you know. A little of this and a little of that.

Did you watch the Oscars? I didn't catch the first 30 minutes, but then I managed to watch most of the rest. In a moment of poor planning on my part, Sydney had a book report that was due the following morning and she had more work to do than we realized.
Fortunately, there are two English teachers in the house and the one who was less interested in watching the Oscars was drafted into helping Sydney finish. It's possible I might have even thought that Jason got his job as an English teacher just to prepare him for this moment when I would say: please help her write this paper so I can sit on the couch for the next three hours and watch beautiful people win a small trophy.
Possibly.
The highlights for me were seeing Daniel Day-Lewis win for Lincoln, seeing the Les Mis cast sing "One More Day," and seeing Argo win Best Picture. I don't know if I thought it should have won best picture, but I wasn't surprised. I've been told it has a lot of Hollywood insider jokes, and it doesn't have that "give me an award" feeling that Lincoln does. (Don't get me wrong; I loved Lincoln and would have been happy to see Spielberg win. But it's not subtle in its THIS IS IMPORTANT STUFF message.)
I didn't care for Seth MacFarlane, but whatever.

Because I don't have time to catch up with who the cool kids are in Hollywood, I was not particularly aware that a lot of people don't like Anne Hathaway.
Not just dislike her, but DISLIKE her with a passion.
Thanks to my sister's stellar research, know we know why: it's her face.
The theory is that people prefer those with rounder faces more than those with slender faces.
It's true that the world has always loved Drew Barrymore (round face) even when she was making terrible life decisions. Adele also has a lovely round face, which is perhaps why I wasn't the slightest bit bothered by her Oscar ensemble (also, the woman had a baby a few months ago, so getting out of the house with a pretty dress and make-up is high marks from me).
Other round faces? My sister. Anyone who knows both Andrea and I will automatically gravitate towards her. I used to think it was her winning personality, but now I know it's just because my face isn't round enough.
Sidenote: the comments on the article justify my belief that (1) lots of people really do like Anne Hathaway and (2) CNN is just as ridiculous a news source as all the rest.

Just tonight a former student of mine brought this site to my attention. If you're not familiar with The Onion, then it might not seem funny.
But if you already know the joke--that The Onion makes up its news stories--then seeing people's earnest FB responses might just make you laugh.
I laughed. Laughed until I cried. Literally.

One of my goals for 2013 was to start making meals that I'm interested in making even if I know only Jason and I will truly enjoy it. The girls are picky eaters, and I suppose when it comes down to it, Jason and I are a little bit picky too, so whatever I'm making is still going to be rather mainstream.
Last week I made Pioneer Woman's chicken parmigiana, and man oh man was it good. The chicken was chicken--nothing amazing about it. But the sauce? Holy moly. The next day I just ate the sauce like a bowl of soup it was that good.

I loved it so much I took a picture of it. It's out of focus because my hands were shaking just a tiny bit because I was so excited to have found a meal that, in some form or another, my whole family would eat (the girls ate the chicken once we took the bread off it; Sydney ate the noodles plain). Highly recommend.

My sister was involved in a scientific study at her university involving eye tracking. The researchers would say words in English and a foreign language, and she would look to the left it was a real word, and look to the right if it wasn't a word (or vice versa, I don't remember and it doesn't matter to the story).
After she was finished with her part, the researcher told her that she should sign up for other eye tracking studies. "You have very trackable eyes," he told her.
We both agreed: Best pick up line ever.

The highlight of an otherwise seriously miserable week: I got a new camera.
That camera I was hoping for? The Nikon D5100?

We can all thank Jason for being super de-duper awesome. It helped take off some of the misery of soccer season starting, I will admit.
I'm still getting used to it, but so far, I'm smitten. It is not, as my dad so kindly pointed out, a serious camera (he made up for his snarky comment by giving me a nice memory card for the camera). But it is a big step up from what I have been using. I may have even slept with it next to my bed last night.

If you're feeling a little blue this week--and who isn't after enduring January and February--then you might want to watch this video.
It's not sweet or sentimental, and unless you get all teary eyed when you see people celebrate a major accomplishment (like me), it won't make you cry.
But it probably will make you smile because what's not to love about a soccer player/cheerleader making a half-court shot?
Joy is contagious, so let's keep spreading it.
