We had big plans for 2012. Jason and I travelled to Scotland in April and had a family vacation in Reno, Nevada in August. My blog-friend-turned-real-life-friend Kim stayed with us for a week. We got new flooring in our house, renovated the girls' bathroom, painted the kitchen cabinets, installed wainscoting in a couple different areas. Jules started kindergarten and ballet. Sydney started piano lessons and learned how to ride a dirt bike. Addie just keeps growing up and is the only one of my three girls to make me sentimental about babies.
I grew a garden full of things that we actually ate.
I ran a marathon, a result of a New Year's day resolution.
Jason and I celebrated 15 years of marriage.
And at the end of the year, I can look back and see how we grew, how we changed, how our hearts broke and soared. To me, every year has a personality, a feeling. Twenty twelve? It was about creating an environment and life that made me see more clearly the kind of person I want to be. In lots of ways I took it easy and moved slowly. But in the end that helped me figure out what I want to keep, and what I want to give up.
And here we are again, at the beginning of another year.
I like New Year's day. It feels full of possibilities, and I am one of those people who likes to make resolutions.
My resolutions for this year?
Read more. I did not read enough books this last year. I read a lot of essays, particularly academic ones that inspired me, but they do little to stretch my brain beyond the classroom. I know why books didn't make it to the top of my priority list, and it's a long uninteresting story involving medication and short attention spans and fuzzy thinking. But this year I've already loaded the Kindle with some excellent books, and I have a goal to read 24 books.
Keep running. I like running. It makes me feel strong and sassy. Jason and I signed up for the Eugene Half-Marathon, although we won't be running it together since he's way faster than me.
Paint. I have had painting projects on my to-do list for ages, and so I'm putting it in writing: paint the filing cabinet and paint the china cabinet. I know. You were thinking that I meant creative, artistic painting. No. That is not my thing. But nesting? I'm kind of addicted to it.
Sew. I figured out my sewing machine. I sat down one day, read the manual, learned how to use all the gadgets, and then sewed myself some livingroom curtains. Then I didn't like the color of the curtains...so they are going to be playroom curtains. I have a goal to sew new curtains, and sew skirts for each of the girls.
Write. One thing I worked really hard on last year? Getting a lot of sleep. (Ultimately that's why I generally stopped blogging. I lost all my kid-free time, and so my computer sat and collected dust.) This year, however, I feel like I have to carve out time to write. I have to. I'm not going all crazy with the blog-every-day stuff, but I'm setting a goal for three times a week. There. I said it. On New Year's Day. I have to do it now.
I have character traits that I'm working on too, but not as New Year's resolutions. They are ones I've been working on, and will continue to work on for the rest of my life.
We spent our last day of 2012 catching snowflakes, looking at zoo lights, drinking hot chocolate, and hanging out with friends.
A perfect way to end the year.
Happy New Year, friends. I hope that 2013 is filled with more joy than you know what to do with.
