Parent conferences were this week.
Despite the fact that I feel like we do not keep up on homework, the girls have managed to complete most assignments--enough that I did not get scolded by their teachers. Sydney's teacher complimented her on her tenderheart and her desire to do well; Jules' teacher complimented her on her kindness and eagerness to do schoolwork. I was relieved that Jules has put her best foot forward in class (no meltdowns! no raging against her classmates!), and that Sydney has only cried once so far this school year.

Another discovery at parent/teacher conferences? My girls so far have perfect attendance. This may seem like no big deal, but it's actually a first for us. I know the reason for our star attendance: my niece Clover is going to school with Sydney this year, and she rides with us to school (Sarah does pick-up). This tiny bit of extra responsibility on my part has meant that the girls haven't been absent or late to school yet. You see, when it's just my kids going to school, I'm not that reliable at getting them there on time, or, horrors, sometimes not at all. But when someone else is counting on me? I guess I can be responsible afterall.

Fall is finally upon us.
We had amazing sunshine up until a week ago, and then finally after three months of hardly any rain, the rains came. Only for a couple days though and then it was back to sunshine. Now, however, it looks like we might have rain for a long stretch--just in time for the girls' first soccer game tomorrow. Good times of watching games in the rain.

This last week I rediscovered my love of foggy mornings.
Out the car window after dropping the girls off at school:
The view off our back porch:
Foggy drops glistening on a spider's web (I used an olloclip on my iPhone for this macro shot):
The view from Ty and Sarah's driveway as I was picking Clover up for school:
Fog makes me feel like writing poems. And reading poems. And quoting Carl Sandburg.
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

Speaking of poetry, I was once again reminded today how much I love Mary Oliver's poetry. On a lark this afternoon, I downloaded A Thousand Mornings to my Kindle, and it's really a perfect autumn read. Her thoughts on nature are not difficult to understand in the least. If you are even remotely interested in poetry, I highly recommend it.

Operation "Update Kitchen/Dining Room" recently received another major purchase: a new dining room table. At some point, I will have to devote an entire post to all the changes we've made, but for now, a picture:
We don't actually have the table yet, but expect its arrival later this month. It's the Brooklyn dining room table from World Market, and I'm nervous and excited about getting it. I'm excited because I think it will look fantastic in our dining area; I'm nervous because there is very little information out there regarding the durability of the table and if the faux stone top is easy to care for. I'm hoping that it doesn't have an allergic reaction to crayons or messy fingerprints because that would be ridiculously inconvenient.

Some mornings it's all I can do to not take a million pictures of dew on grass.
Some mornings dew on grass feels like the most beautiful thing on earth.
My regular camera does not do macro especially well, and so I kneel with my phone, my knees getting drenched in the grass.
Sometimes Addie watches me take pictures, but usually she wanders jammy footed down the driveway, across the lawn, soaking her feet as thoroughly as my knees are soaked.
It must be the sparkles that I love. And the balance of dewdrops on blades of grass. The whole thing, really, just makes me so happy.
Dew drops, fog, and Mary Oliver. I hope your weekend gives you at least one of these glories.
